인천시 중구는 5일 '2025년도 제4회 중구 지명위원회'를 열고 제3연륙교 중구 대표 명칭을 '인천국제공항대교'로 최종 결정했다. 중구는 국가지명위원회에 재심의를 청구할 방침이다.
중구는 지난달 인천시 지명위원회가 '청라하늘대교'를 의결한 이후 인터넷 카페, 주민간담회, 민간협의체 회의 등을 통해 주민 의견을 수렴했다. 주민들은 특정 지명보다 인천을 대표할 중립 명칭이 합리적이라는 데 공감했다.
◆ "인천국제공항 위상 직관적 표현… 도시브랜드와도 부합"
중구 지명위원회는 위치적 정체성, 지역 상징성, 지역 형평성, 갈등 최소화, 주민 의견, 지명 전문가 의견, 외국인·관광객 이용 편의성 등을 종합 검토했다.
위원회는 '인천국제공항대교'가 영종국제도시와 청라국제도시를 넘어 인천시 전체 위상을 높일 수 있다고 판단했다. 대한민국 대표 관문 공항인 인천국제공항을 직관적으로 연상할 수 있고, 인천시 도시브랜드 'all ways INCHEON'을 상징적으로 나타낼 수 있다는 이유다.
제3연륙교는 수도권제2순환고속도로·경인고속도로와 연결돼 서울·경기 등 전국 각지로 이어진다. 영종·청라 주민은 물론 인천국제공항을 오가는 내·외국인이 이용하는 교통 인프라다.
국토지리정보원 '지명 표준화 편람'에 따르면 하나의 지역 요소를 적용해 분쟁 소지가 있는 지명은 배제하는 것이 원칙이다.
◆ 서명운동 전개… "국가지명위 현명한 판단 기대"
중구는 이달 중 국가지명위원회에 '인천국제공항대교' 명칭으로 재심의를 청구할 계획이다. 재심의 청구 시까지 서명운동을 전개해 시민 뜻을 모은다.
서명운동 참여 방법은 온라인 서명, 중구청 및 12개 동 행정복지센터 민원실 방문, 공동주택 비치 서명부 작성이다.
김정헌 중구청장은 "국가지명위원회 재심의를 통해 제3연륙교 명칭이 '인천국제공항대교'로 관철될 수 있도록 모든 행정 역량을 집중하겠다"고 밝혔다. 김 청장은 "지역 간 소모적 갈등을 끝내고 제3연륙교가 지역 화합의 상징이자 인천을 대표하는 합리적 명칭으로 결정되길 바란다"며 "국가지명위원회의 현명한 판단을 기대한다"고 말했다.

Incheon Jung-gu held the '4th Jung-gu Place Names Committee of 2025' on December 5 and finalized 'Incheon International Airport Bridge' as the district's representative name for the 3rd Yeonryuk Bridge. Jung-gu plans to request a review from the National Geographic Names Committee.
After the Incheon City Place Names Committee resolved on 'Cheongna Sky Bridge' last month, Jung-gu collected residents' opinions through internet cafes, resident meetings, and private consultative body meetings. Residents agreed that a neutral name representing Incheon is more reasonable than a specific place name.
◆ "Intuitively represents Incheon International Airport status… Aligns with city brand"
The Jung-gu Place Names Committee comprehensively reviewed locational identity, regional symbolism, regional equity, conflict minimization, resident opinions, place name expert opinions, and convenience for foreigners and tourists.
The committee determined that 'Incheon International Airport Bridge' can elevate the overall status of Incheon City beyond Yeongjong International City and Cheongna International City. The name intuitively evokes Incheon International Airport, Korea's representative gateway airport, and symbolically represents Incheon's city brand 'all ways INCHEON.'
The 3rd Yeonryuk Bridge connects to the 2nd Metropolitan Area Ring Expressway and Gyeongin Expressway, linking to Seoul, Gyeonggi, and other regions nationwide. It is transportation infrastructure used by Yeongjong and Cheongna residents as well as domestic and foreign travelers to and from Incheon International Airport.
According to the 'Place Name Standardization Manual' published by the National Geographic Information Institute, it is a principle to exclude place names that may cause disputes by applying a single regional element.
◆ Signature campaign launched… "Expecting wise judgment from National Geographic Names Committee"
Jung-gu plans to request a review from the National Geographic Names Committee with the name 'Incheon International Airport Bridge' this month. A signature campaign will be conducted until the review request to gather citizens' opinions.
Participation methods include online signatures, visits to Jung-gu Office and 12 dong administrative welfare centers, and signing at apartment complexes.
Jung-gu District Mayor Kim Jung-hun stated, "We will concentrate all administrative capabilities to ensure the 3rd Yeonryuk Bridge name is established as 'Incheon International Airport Bridge' through the National Geographic Names Committee review." Mayor Kim added, "I hope the 3rd Yeonryuk Bridge will be decided as a symbol of regional harmony and a reasonable name representing Incheon, ending wasteful regional conflicts. I expect a wise judgment from the National Geographic Names Committee."
